"These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which as they kiss consume"
This quote is said by Friar Laurence to Romeo when Romeo asks him to marry him and Juliet. What Friar Laurence means by these lines is that love that is so violently passionate, like Romeo and Juliet's, ends violently and far more quickly than moderate love, which tends to endure better. Of course, we know in Romeo and Juliet that in the end their violently passionate love ends in violent death just as Friar Laurence portended. In reference to New Moon, I believe Meyer is trying to point out two things- the end of Bella and Edward's relationship when he leaves and of course the violent reaction Bella has to this- she talks constantly of the hole that has been ripped through her soul. Secondly, the fact that, like Romeo, Edward could not bare to live in a world without Bella, and, again like Romeo, he would kill himself rather than live without her.
