HONESTLY, it was the title that got me. It reminded me of the song from a movie a decade or so ago. The song was about falling in love. This book, however, is a tad different. It tells of a love that’s doomed. Forbidden yet irresistible. It’s more than simply chemistry pulling two people together. The love involves parallel universes and lasts through centuries. Don’t you dream of such a love in your life? At least, before you turn cynical, that is! The story begins with a girl enrolling in a new school which is filled with problematic characters, so much so the school seems a prison to her. Only one person gives her reprieve because there is “something achingly familiar” about him. He is enigmatic and aloof, yet she is drawn to him. He tries to keep her at arm’s length despite his apparent attraction to her. This makes you wonder: why push her away when their attraction is so obvious? And what is he hiding? As written on the back cover of the book, “Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.” I totally agree. I’d recommend a whole day dedicated to reading this with your favourite poison. And do turn the phone off, draw the curtains and order takeaway. I certainly did and it was equivalent to a short holiday, a respite from reality.
